About Us

A natural underground treasure inspiring visitors since 1868

A Discovery Beneath the Hills

Nestled in the scenic hills of Dubuque County, Crystal Lake Cave is one of Iowa’s most fascinating natural attractions and a destination that has been welcoming explorers for generations.

Our story began in 1868 when miners searching for lead and zinc unexpectedly uncovered a breathtaking underground world filled with crystal formations, stalactites, stalagmites, and other geological wonders. What started as a remarkable discovery soon became one of the region’s most treasured attractions, drawing visitors from across the country to experience the beauty hidden beneath the surface.

Today, Crystal Lake Cave continues that tradition through guided tours that combine natural beauty, science, history, and adventure. As you journey through our limestone passages, you’ll discover formations shaped over thousands of years and learn the fascinating story of the cave’s discovery, development, and preservation.

Whether you’re visiting with family, exploring with friends, or simply looking for a unique Iowa adventure, our goal is to create an experience that is both memorable and educational. From first-time visitors to returning guests, we take pride in sharing the wonder of this underground treasure with everyone who walks through our doors.

At a constant 52 degrees year-round, Crystal Lake Cave offers an unforgettable escape into a world where nature continues to shape and create. We invite you to step below the surface, explore the beauty of Iowa’s hidden underground landscape, and become part of a story that has inspired visitors for more than 150 years.

Amy

Hello! I am Amy Ramirez-McGovern, a Owner & Operator at Crystal Lake Cave based in Dubuque, Iowa. With over 20 years in the business sector, I recently started this new journey owning & operating a Show Cave. I am passionate about not only sharing this experience with our locally community but also national & international guests. I am truly blessed being able to operate this cave with my family.

Throughout my career, I have found that leadership is simply a teaching experience. I lead with compassion and empathy for those I manage. I strive to keep staff engaged in productive work activates, operate as a team and affirm their value within the company. Finally, I always remember that a leader is also a student. We learn and grow together and produce the highest levels of achievement. It’s in these achievements; we can serve our guests and community with greatness.

When I am not working at the cave, you can usually find me volunteering by helping the least among us, mentoring or hard at work on my homestead. Providing faith, food & fun for my children, grandchildren & husband is my top priority in life.
